AGED RESIDENT'S MEMORIES MRS. M. PILLINGER JACKSON Memories of the time when an important part of Auckland's present-day business area was but a tidal swamp and. when a journey made with a bullock waggon from Onehunga to Queen Street represented a trek of several days are retained by Mrs. Margaret Pillinger Jackson, of 61 Balmoral Road, Mount Eden. Mrs. Jackson, who is in her 90th year, has been a resident of Auckland for moro than 70 years. Tho second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Williams, Mrs. Jackson was born in Liverpool on November 23, 1848, and came to New Zealand when she was 16 years of ago. Her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. D. Patterson, were emigrating to New Zealand and she decided to accompany them, moro with tho idea of making a holiday trip than with settling here. They wero among tho 126 passengers carried in the barque Winterthur. Miss Williams was married shortly before her 18th birthday to Captain Benjamin Pillinger, who was lost at sea in March, 1884. At the time of his death, Captain Pillinger was master of tho islands trading schooner Louie. Twelve years later, Mrs. Pillinger married Mr. Arthur Strothcr Jackson, who died in 1010. Apart from residence for short periods at Thames and at Aratapu, in tho Northern Wairoa district, and from a trip made in England hi 1902, at tho time of tho coronation of King Edward VII., Mrs. Jackson has lived in Auckland ever since she came to New Zealand. Three of Mrs. Jackson's seven children are still living. There are 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Although age has dimmed her memory to some extent of happenings years ago, Mrs. Jackson is remarkably alert and takes a keen interest in current affairs.
