FLOODING AT OPOTIKI HIGH WIND CAUSES DAMAGE ROOF TORN FROM HOUSE [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] OPOTIKI, Wednesday Backed up by a north-easterly wind of considerable force, tho high tide flooded the northern part of the borough last night. In Princess Street the water was a foot deep and one resident had to leave his home. This is the first time that the sea has flooded this part of the town to such a depth. All low-lying land along the coast was flooded by sea water. The high tide also backed up the Waioeka River, which overflowed at tho end of Ford Street; ' ■'■■■ ' ■ The fairid blew with great force and damage is reported from various parts of tho district. A house on tho farm of Mesirs. Shalfoon and Candy, 'at Paerata Ridge, occupied by Mr. I. Walker, farm manager, had the roof torn off at tho front. Mr. Walker and his young family were forced to leave the house, taking shelter in the garage. Most of the furniture was removed from the damaged house. Heavy rain fell throughout the afternoon, but the rivers did not flood to any extent.

HIGH TIDE AT DARGAVILLE WATER IN MAIN STREET [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] DARGAVILLE, Wednesday An exceptionally high spring tide, backed by a strong south-easterly wind, encroached on the main street at the lower end of the town early this morning, but did not enter the shops. The water reached within inches of tho doorways and left a clearly-defined mark along the footpaths. Water flooded across the foreshore reserve and covered the road at one point to a depth of some inches, while water also entered the back of a shop on the river-bank. The tide ran in very Bwiftly again this morning, the level of the river rising rapidly, but fears of shops being flooded •were not realised.
