THE DAVIS CUP
AUSTRALIAN TEAM BRIEF AUCKLAND VISIT PROSPECTS OF SUCCESS "Our chances in the cup are fair," said Mr. H. C. Hopman, captainmanager of the Australian Davis Cup team, who, with the other members of the team, Messrs. J. Bromwich, A. Qnist and L. Schwartz, was a through passenger to America by the Mariposa yesterday. "In Bromwich and Quist we have two of the best five or six singles players in the world, and, as a double combination, these two have proved themselves equal to or better than any other pair," added Mr. Hopman. "During the past Australian season Broniwicb. and Quist defeated D. Budge and C. G. Mako and G. von Cramm and H. Henkel in doubles several times, and both Budge and von Cramm regard Quist as tho world's leading doubles player. If we reach the final, we shall certainly find it difficult to beat Budge, but we have a good chance in the second singles and a in the doubles." The Australian team would meet Mexico at Kansas City about the end of July in the first match in the American zone, Mr. Hopman said. If buc- • cessfui, it would next play the winner of Japan and Canada, and, if still iindefeated, would contest with the winner of the European zone the right to meet America in the final. Apart from Davis Cup engagements, members, of the team intend to compete in the American doubles championship at Boston, the American singles championship at Forest Hills, 'New York, and the Pacific South West championships at Los Angeles. Ihey expect to return to Australia by November 1.
