thrills in test FOLLOW-ON AVOIDED great partnership BROWN AND O'REILLY EIGHTH-WICKET STAND By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received June 28, 12.50 a.m.) LONDON, Juno 27 Requiring 46 runs to avoid a follow on in the second test match at Lord's ground, the Australians resumed their first innings this morning. s Five wickets wero down for 299 in reply to England's total of 494 when the not-oufc ' batsmen—Brown (140) and Barnett (6) —took strike. Barnett •jvas out after making two moro runs and Chipperfield went for one, but {hanks to a magnificent partnership between Brown and O'Reilly tho day was saved. Rain and the bad light caused play to bo suspended shortly beforo the luncheon adjournment. The score at this stage was 393 for the loss of nine wickets.

-The weather'was dull, with the possibility of a drizzle when play began The gates were closed at 10.45 a.m. thousands being turned back. Twelveand sixpenny tickets were offered at £2 apiece outside the gates. Five runs came from Fames' first over. Barnett, in Verity's first over, tried to lift a ball to the outfield and was easily caught in the covers. Chipperfield went leg-before to the second ball of Verity's second over. His damaged finger is still painful. O'Reilly's Narrow Escape The last ball of Verity's second over beat and nearly bowled O'Reilly. Brown's difficulty in playing Fames was suggestive of marked deterioration of the wicket. Verity twice more beat O'Reilly. Brown reached a fighting 150 in 290 minutes. He batted with great skill and determination. O'Reilly, when he had made 11, was missed by Paynter off Verity, a high and difficult chance. O'Reilly then began to hit out and the pair saved the follow-on, although it is not likely that Hammond would have enforced it. O'Reilly, batting with great vigour and an eye for the right ball, drove Verity for two successive sixes, and the crowd gasped. The eighth wicket partnership had courageously added 64 runs in half an hour. Then Brown cover-drove Wellard for two successive fours. Change of Bowler ~ O'Reilly's onslaught caused Verity to be taken off at 371 in favour of Wright, who bowled O'Reilly with his fifth ball, byt it was a no-ball. "With light rain falling, O'Reilly cracked Fames stylishly for a four to the covers. Brown's 20th fcur came from a late cut off Wright, ai d he had reached 184 when O'Reilly had made 43 in 45 minutes. He hit two sixes and five fours in a splendid and often highlypoliibed innings, which ended when he was bowled middle-stump. Ninety-four runs had been added today in just under an hour. McCormick cocked up the next ball to Barnett at short leg. Fames was deprived of a hat trick when Compton dropped his next ball to Fleetwood-Smith. Heavier rain was falling and the players came off at 12.35 p.m. Details of the scores are as follow: ENGLAND—First Innings Hutton, c Brown, b McCormick . . 6 " Barnett, c Brown, b McCormick .. 18 Edrich, b McCormick . . . . .. 0 Hammond, b McCormick .. *. 240 Paynter, lbw, b O'Reilly . . . . 99 Compton, lbw, b O'Reilly 6 Ames, c McCormick, b FleetwoodSmith 83 Verity, b O'Reilly 5 Wellard, c McCormick, b O'Reilly 4 Wright, b Fleet wood-Smith .... 6 Fames, not out . . . „« x n . , 5 Extras * * *« km km p,• 22 Total a ■* n an n * an v • 494 Bowling O.
