Conditions at Epsom ,on many days of racing were not conducive to; speed, but the course was in splendid order and a good standard of times was maintained for the season. On suitable days v fast efforts' were , recorded, and fresh, records established, the new figures, being set by two Australian-bred tinlioppled pacers, ' 'Nervie's Last and Lawu Derby. At the Auckland Trotting Owners' Association's' matinee meeting in October, 'Nervie's Last/ paced for the first half by Lucky Love; and the second' by Charterls Bay, tan it mile in 2.4 2-5, equalling the Australian grass track record held by Happy Voyage and Impromptu. Fi .T. Smith rated Nervie's Last at 1.0 2-5 for the first half, steady-, ing him to 33s for the next quarter, to come home the last quarter in 30s. At the ' summer meeting, Nervie's Last, from 3.20, was placed in the St. Heliers Hajulioap in 3.15 1-5, lowering the record: of Sure and Nawton Parrish by. a second. At Addington lie took a two-mile placed record of 4.21,1-5. Lawn Derby won the President's Handicap off 4.22 in 4.17 3-5. The winning track record, 4.15 2-5, is held by Roi L'Or, who also has a placed record of 4.14 1-5, but Lawn Derby's time is easily the best by a free-legged horse. The Australian champion started twice at Auckland and once at Cambridge in an exhibition heat, but the race he won was his only solid exhibition. Speed of Nawton Parrish Nawton Parrish gave several smart performances. His 3.16 1-5, when. placed in the Grandstand Handicap, equalled the mile and a-half record of Sure, and was tho second best. Nawton' Tarrish won the Kia Ora Handicap at Hutt Park in 3.16 3-5, scoring comfortably from Winaway, who ran 3.1 G. ' Rongomai won off 3-24 in 3.16 3-5/ and from the same line r Cold Dredge registered 3.16 4-5. Crocus. p\it up two attractive efforts,, winning in 3.17 3-5 off 3,30, and in. 3.17 2-5 off. 3,27. The consistent Gay Sister, off 3.30, was, placed in 3.17 4-5. An outstanding effort was credited to Kewpie's , liond at the August meeting when, on a (lead track, she won the Onehunga Handicap off 3.27 in 3.18 4-5. ' . " ' At the winter meeting,' when the track was holding, Nervie's Last recorded 3.19, Kewpie's Triumph 3'.20 2-5, Ironside 3.21, and Star Prohto 3.22 1-5. On the same track,!'Vanora's 3.24 and Bronze Queen's 3.24 2-5 were high- 1 class for horses on.a 3.32 line. One of the |)est performances of the season, tinder adverse conditions, was the success of Proletarian at the April meeting in 3.25 off 3.27. Prqletarian earlier in his career put up consistent time at various distances, his. figures being 2.47 2-5, 3i21 and 4.28. Smart Novices - / Good timies were returned on several occasions by horses in the novice class, honours going to Chili Bean, who in October won the Improvers' Handicap off 3.5 in 2.47. This time was equalled by Greaf, Chum in June, off 2.51. Bronze Queen recorded 2.47 3-5, Adversity 2.48 and Axminster 2.48 3-5-, all off 3.5. Forest Jewel's success in 2.51 off 3.4, under unfavourable conditions, was one of the best at the distance. • Among the higher-grade pacers, Rongotai, 2.42 1-5, and Gold Dredge, 2.42 2-5, from 2.47, were the best. Kenworthy, 2.43 3-5 off 2.48, and King's Warrior, who ran the same time on a holding track, also did well. Lucky Jack, 4.19 4-5, Willow Wave, 4.20 2-5, and King's Warrior, 4.20 3-5, made tho best two-mile figures after Lawn Derby. Willow Wave was credited with 4.20 for third in the President's Handicap, but when allowance is, made for the time he lost at .the start his effort appears very much better. Handieapper's 3.21 3-5 off 3.32 in the spring was a sound performance, and one of the best records of the early season. Handicapper, on a dead track, was placed in a mile saddle in 2.13 2-5 off 2.19, hut this time was eclipsed by Argolis, who, off 2.18. beat him in 2.12. Our Pegrv, who was third, ran 2.13 off 2.18." ' - •' { ■ Elissa-'s Two-Mile Trot • When conditions Avere favourable, trotters made good time,"Parrish Belle winning the Rowe Memorial Handicap in 4.34 3-5 off 4.43, and being second off 4.40 in the Association Handicap in 4.34 1-5. In January Parrish Belle, in an exhibition with the pacer Noble Prince, trotted a mile in 2.13. She has a mile and a-quarter record 1 of 2.46 1-5; also a 2.13 rate. -•' / . : .. Bittersweet, who .was second-in the Rowe Handicap, trotted 4.31 off 4.3,8, but one of the outstanding performances was Elissa's 4.34 2-5 from 4.50 for second in the Tamaki Handicap to Waingake, who from 4.57 recorded 4.40. .Tan John, after being, third in the Rowe Handicap in 4.39 3-5, returned the same figures to'win th 6 Association Handicap. On heavy tracks, Impostor registered 3.31 3-5, and Pirate's Last went 3.33 3-5. Tho latter's times varied little, as he also won in 3.34 2-5 and 3.35. • An outstanding performance among maiden trotters was that of Grand Triumph at Claudelands, when lie .won easily in 3.31 2-5 off 3.49. This effort was equalled at Palmerston North by Tonee, who won his first race in the same timo, also very easily. Great Sonoma's win at Thames in 4.39 Was the best at two miles at the country meetings. New Records in Country When Gay Sister won tho Thames Trotting Cup in 4.29 3-5 she lowered Great Chum's placed track record of 4.30, both from a 4.43 line. At Cambridge Baron Grand registered 4.31 2-5 off 4.45 for second in the Summer Handicap, . Sir Frank at .Claudelands was placed in 3.21 2-5, equalling the track record of Red Frontier. Sandusky was placed in 3.22 3-5 at Hamilton, when Nawton Parrish won at a mile and a-quarter in 2.49. This time was equalled by Eyre in winning her first race, off 3.5. while Uenuku, 2.49 2-5, and Wall Street, 2.49 3-5, also made i«;ood figures. Crocus, 2.45 2-5, Hearsay, 2.48, and Oiu: Peggy, 2.48 1-5, also did well. Kia Kah'a, 2.50 3-5, Peter Smith, 2.50 4-5, and John's Last, who was timed in 2.51, were best of the others. Hon Bingon and Charlie Cbnn ran 2.15, Our Summer 2.15 1-5, and Bold Venture 2.15 3-5, in saddle. In an 'exhibition race at Cambridge King's Play showed fine speed in going 2.43 2-5. Ho ran the last mile in 2.10 and the final half in a minute, Nervie's Last going very close to this time. Hearsay, 2.50, Roman Chief, 2.51 2-5, Uenuku and Tommy- McElwyn,! 2.52, made very creditable time. Roma .Girl's win over 13 furlongs in 3.46, off 4.3, was full of merit. • Sandusky recorded ! 2.46 1-5 at Thames, Bedford 2.47 1-5, Baron Grand 2.47 2-5, and Our War 2.48. For a three-year-old, Uenuku, in going two miles in 4.33 3-5 and a mile and a-quar-ter in 2.48 3-5; displayed speed and stamina of a high order.
