WINTER PRODUCE

WHANGAREI DISPLAY RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED RESULTS OF EARLY JUDGING' OFFICIAL OPENING TO-DAY [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHANGAREI, Monday Tho arrangement of tlio displays on the largo area covered by the Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society's winter exhibition is now almost complete in readiness for the official opening of the show, which is to be performed to-morrow afternoon by tho deputy-mayor of Auckland, Mr. J. A. C. Alluni. The streets are festooned to-night with ropes of coloured lights and an air of festivity pervades the town. The judging of some of the exhibits was commenced this morning, but this work will not be completed until Friday. The entries received this year constitute a record, the major increases being in the cage birds, fruit and bacon pig sections. A display of much interest is provided by the last-named section, which comprises pigs shown at the society's summer stock show. Tho Maori arts and crafts section has fewer entries than in past years, but the work is of high educational value. The women's institutes again have displayed a keen interest in tho exhibition, and tho various institute courts are a revelation of what can bo economically made in tho homo. . Tho preserves and baking and the master bakers' sections arc both woll contestod. A largo court devoted to the display of models is outstanding, among tho exhibits being workingmodol aeroplanes, speed-boats and yachts. Awards made so far are as follows:Bacon Pig Championship Tho Now Zealand bacon pig championship resulted: —H. E. Johnson and Company (Whangarei), 1, 2 and 3; Amburys, Limited (Auckland), 4; W. S. Miller (Auckland), 5. The winning carcase gained 116 points, nine below the possible. The second award gained 107 poiuts, tho third 105, tho fourth 10-1 and the fifth 101. Tho first award last year gained 98 points. The first three pigs are Large Whites. None of tho placed animals gained an award when judged on the hoof at tho summer show. "The showing of carcases this year can be claimed as the finest that has ever been staged in Australasia," said Mr. H. Kneebono, of Auckland, one of the judges. "I have been a judge in this section for tho past four years and I have seen a wonderful improvement in the quality and standard of the carcases. This has been largely duo to the improved methods of farm management adopted by pig breeders and the greater interest that is being taken in pig breeding. One outstanding feature is the evenness of finish, for which some carcases gained full marks." FRUIT (Judge—Mr. R. Beecroft, Port Albert) Apples.—Dessert, any one variety; G. Reynolds, 1.
