JOINT CONFERENCE FARMERS AND INDUSTRY DISCUSSING MUTUAL PROBLEMS Information that as a result of a conference the national executives of the New Zealand Farmers' Union and the New* Zealand Manufacturers' Federation had agreed to set up subcommittees which would form a joint committee that would discuss problems affecting both bodies was given by the federation in a letter received by tho general committee of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association yesterday. The letter stated that it was made clear at the conference, which was attended by several representatives from each body, that the interests of each were closely connected in several directions. These included high and advancing labour costs, heavy taxation and State interference in industry. It was agreed to meet at regular intervals to discuss mutual problems and that representatives would then report back to their particular bodies. The New Zealand Farmers' Union executive had agreed to the proposal for a joint committee. The president, Mr. H. W. Shove, said that if producing costs went too high manufacturers and farmers suffered, although the condition of tho manufacturer was worse because in such case he was often unable to sell his goods in competition, whereas the farmer had the overseas market. It was reported that a joint committee from the manufacturers and farmers was likely to form a deputation to the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, in the near future, in order to make representations on Arbitration Court policy and wage increases.
