DEATH OF MR. G. T. BAYLY RUGBY AND CRICKET CAREERS The death has occurred of Mr. George T. Bayly, a former president of the New Zealand Rugby Union and a member of one of New Zealand's best known sporting families. He died at his farm at Stanmore Bay, Whangaparoa Peninsula, at the age of 82. Mr. Bayly in his youth represented Wanganui and Wellington at Rugby football, and Wellington and Taranaki at cricket. He toured the South Island with the Wellington football team in 1879 and as a three-quarter he scored the winning points in several matches. For 10 years from 1889 ho was president of the Taranaki Rugby Union and in 1888-89 he was president of the New Zealand Rugby Union.
As a cricketer Mr. Bayly had just as notablo a record. In 1882 he was a member of the Wellington team which met Shaw's English team and even as late as 1903, when he was approaching 50 years of age, he played against Lord Hawke's visiting team. Against Shaw's side he performed the remarkable feat of bowling 62 overs, which were then of four balls each, of which 42 were maidens. He bowled right through England's innings, taking five wicket" for 62 runs. In 1887 Mr. Bayly played against another English team, this tune for Taranaki against Alfred Lillywhite's side. , Mr. Bayly was one of nine brothers and five of them played representative Rugby for Taranaki and Wellington. One of them, Alfred, was captain of the 1894 New Zealant team and in 1905 he helped to select the All Blacks. In 1907-08 he was president of the New Zealand Rugby Union. Mr Bayly's eldest son, Arthur, died from an injury suffered at Rugby while at college, and his second son was killed in a motor accident at Newmarket shortly after returning from the Great War. His surviving son Jack is in business at Hawera. There are three daughters. One married Mr. Neville Hill, New Zealand distance runner at the 1908 Olympics Gaines, another married Mr. W. J. Meredith, formerly a well-known Rugby referee, and the third married Mr. I<. (*. Treweek, of Auckland.
