WOOL RESEARCH
OTAGO UNIVERSITY WORK ASSOCIATION'S INTEREST Research work carried out at the Otago University came under review at a recent meeting of the New Zealand Wool Manufacturers' Research Association, at which Mr. James Evans was chairman. The association, which was formed nine months ago, is financed jointly by the wool manufacturers of New 'Zealand and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Members visited the chemistry and the bacteriology departments of the university, where, it is understood, experiments are being made in the former department on the treatment of wool to render it unshrinkable. Interest was also displayed by members in the routine methods of analysis designed to afford a more rigorous control of tho various stages of manufacture, and in the use of new scientific methods, such as ultra violet light, in analytical textile work. The association of such work with the Otago University is regarded as highly satisfactory, both "to the university and to the wool manufacturers. The director pointed out that in England tho universities are regarded not only as training institutions for students, but also as centres of research, having special relation to tho needs of the areas in which they are situated. The concentration of research in universities is an inspiration to tho students and an economy in administration.
