GENERAL ELECTION
THE MID-CANTERBURY SEAT NATIONAL PARTY NOMINEES [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday After protracted negotiations extending over three months, the National Party's candidate for the Mid-Canterbury seat at the general election will be selected at a meeting of delegates of branches of the party in the electorate at llakaia on Thursday evening. There are only two nominees, Mr. David Jones, of Wellington, a former member of Parliament for MidCanterbury, and Mr. M. E. Lyons, of Christchurch. At a meeting of chairmen of the branches with the nominees at Ashburton last Monday, it was agreed that the system to be adopted at the conference of delegates next Thursday should bo on the basis of one vote for each branch and one for every 50 members. This arrangement is a departure from the constitution of the National Party.
HAURAKI CONSTITUENCY ADDRESS BY MR. J. ALLEN A large meeting of residents was held in the Ohinewai hall, when the National candidate for the Hauraki electorate, Mr. J. Allen, gave an address on the organisation and growth of the party. He also spoke of the party's aim to combat the socialistic trend in the Dominion. Mr. Allen dealt with many points of interest in national affairs. The meeting passed a vote of confidence in him and the National Party. .
WESTERN MAORI CANDIDATE MR. R. A. POMARE'S' DECISION [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] WANGANUI. Monday It is announced that Mr. R. A. Pomare, son of the late Sir Maui Pomare, will contest the Western Maori seat in the general election. This electorate is at present represented in Parliament by Mr. Tokuru Ratana.
