PERIOD IN HOSPITAL ' X-RAY OF SCHMELING SPINAL COLUMN AFFECTED CONDITION NOT SERIOUS By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright NEW YORK, June '23 Following his sensational defea| in the first round of the world championship fight with Joe Louis, the German boxer Max Schmeling was admitted to hospital. A bulletin issued at a late hour to-night stated that an X-ray photograph revealed two broken transverse processes on the left side of the spinal column' under the kidneys. The transverse processes are the segments of bone protruding from the vertebrae. Throughout the night Schmeling suffered pains in the back. His condition, however, is not serious. He has been strapped to his bed and is remaining there until July 2, after which he will be taken in an ambulance on board the Bremen to recuperate in Germany. The fight receipts totalled £253,750, of which Louis receives £80,250 and Schmeling £40,000. The highest gate receipts in history, for the second Tunney-Dempsey fight for the world heavy-weight title at Philadelphia on September 23, 1926, totalled £473,933.
