NEW EXHIBITS AT MUSEUM
HISTORIC PIECE OF ROCK MAORI WEAVING DISPLAY The historic piece of rock which led to the discovery of the Nauru and Ocean Island phosphate deposits has been presented to the Auckland War Memorial Museum by Sir Albert Ellis. The rock has been placed on exhibition in the geology hall beside a collection of phosphate rocks previously given by Sir Albert. It is intended by the museum authorities to add to the collection photographs of Nauru Island and of activities in connection with the industry. An interesting addition to the Maori section of the museum is a unit of the Carnegie exchange system of travelling cases, which has been loaned by the Otago Museum. Prepared by Miss L. A. Daff, of Dunedin, the exhibit deals instructively with Maori weaving methods and technique, and is illustrated with models and diagrams. Materials used for weaving and dyeing are represented in water colours, and the implements used in the various stages of the process of making a cloak, from the preparation of the flax to the weaving, are shown.
