SHARP EXCHANGES

WAIHI BOKOUGH COUNCIL THE MUNICIPAL BATHS CHARGE OF EXPLOITATION [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WAIHI, Friday Sharp exchanges between the Mayor, Mr. W. M. Wallnutt, and Mr. A. E. Robinson, a new member, enlivened last night's meeting of the Waihi Borough Council. When an item on the estimates dealing with the municipal baths was reached, Mr. Robinson asked the Mayor how many hours the bathkeeper worked. The Mayor, said he did not know the exact hours worked by the caretaker, as they varied. The caretaker was paid £2 a week, plus 90 per cent of the takings. "Why support a pensioner and exploit him," said Mr. Robinson. "It seems surprising that an employee of the council should be exploited, especially when it is a Labour council." "If you do not retract the term 'exploiting' I will deal with you under the standing orders," said Mr. Wallnutt. Mr. Robinson: I will withdraw the word "exploiting." I know just how far I can go. The Mayor: You know it now, anyhow.
