HOCKEY TOURNEY

COUNTRY WEEK GAMES FOURTH ROUND DECIDED RODNEY TEAM IN THE LEAD For the fourth round of hockey matches in the annual Country Week tourney contested yesterday conditions were much improved and tended toward faster play. TJnevenness in the playing surfaces, however, still discounted good stick-work, but hard hitting and efficient team work kept play open and spectacular. Rodney A has now established a lead in the A section of the White Horse Cup, but the issue is still open and should this team be defeated to-day at least two, and probably three, teams will tie for first place in the section. This will necessitate further games to determine which team shall meet the winner of the B section. In the B section the issuo is again open with Waipa A and Whangarei B level in the lead with five points each and Piako only a point behind. However, as Waipa A and Whangarei B have to play off this afternoon the result will probably be definite. Thero was no decision in the game between Whangarei B and Piako in the ladies' division for the Lowe Cup. As a result the cup will remain with the holders, Whangarei B. Auckland was successful in winning the playoff in the B section of the Provincial Cup, but the A section is still open. This will be finalised to-day, when the two leading teams Whangarei A and Waikato are to meet. The former team at present has a lead of one point over Waikato. Wing-forwards Shine A feature of the day's play was the fine exhibitions given generally by the wing-for-wards, who showed great speed and good control of the ball, although conditions were not all in their favour. In this respect Rodney A was particularly well served. A Langridge showing great agility on the left and E. Phillips repeating his dashing displays on the right. Prominent, too, in this game was G. Windley, who, on the left wing for Whangarei, was responsible for many chances being given to his inside forwards, besides scoring the only goal for his side. Having an excellent defence as well as a forceful forward line, bota K. Wyatt and G. Katavich, defending well and often brilliantly, Rodney proved the better tenm, scoring halfway through the first half and increasing the lead to 3—l in the second spell. Franklin, the Whangarei A goalkeeper, brought off many fine saves. Whangarei B had much the better of the game against Waipa B and played in a dashing style that gave the losers no chanco. Many of the goals were scored from runaway dashes and in general the finishing work in the circle was very clean. In the match between Waipa A and Piako, which ended in a draw, two goals each, the latter team was a little unfortunate in being not able to press home its advantage. The Waipa players had little success in flicking and pushing the ball and when they changed back to hard hitting, near the end of the game, became much more efficient. A definite advantage was held all the time by Franklin A. which defeated Thamcs-Hau-raki by five goals to nil. Following were the results: — WHITE' HORSE CUP Section A. —Franklin A, 5 (Gilmore. 3, Doull, Witham), Thames-Hauraki, 0; Rodney A, 3 (T. Grimmer .2, J. Grimmer), Whangarei A, 1 (G. INDIAN TEAM'S WIN MATCH AT HAWERA [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION ] HAWERA. Thursday Displaying all-round superiority the touring Indian hockey team defeated South Taranaki at Hawera by s'x goals to one. The Taranaki team was on defence for the greatest part of the time, the individual players being unable to cope with the tricky stickwork and positional play of the tourists. For India Fernandez scored four goals and Fcrozo Khan two. The South Taranaki goal came off a stick of an Indian forward while he was attempting to clear. The match was played at a fast pace, the home eleven doing bolter in-the first half than after the interval. The impression was that the visitors scored just as many goals as they desired. REPRESENTATIVE MATCH As C. Stewart is not available L. Hogben, of University, will fill the right-half position for tho Auckland team which is to meet the Country representatives at Remuera to-morrow.
