TURF JOTTINGS
TRACK AND STABLE NEWS When Potent won the Final Handicap at the Groymoftth races he gave L. J. Ellis his first winning ride since he rode Lady Leigh to victory at Ashburton on May 14. Arctic King's two-year-old full-sister has been named Arctic Queen, and she has been leased by-. Mrs. G. E. W6od to the Hastings trainer W. H. Corlett, who will race her in partnership with Mr. F. B. Brough. Private advice was received in Auckland yesterday that Pooley Bridge, tho pre-post favourite for the Victoria Grand National Hurdles, contested the Toolambool Hurdles at Caulfield on Saturday, but broke down badly. A member of W. J. McLean's team now at Ellerslie, Marie's Acre, is in good health and doing light* tasks in view of a spring campaign. The fine son of Acre is a galloper above the average and he should be a prospect for early events in the coming season. Although he has no immediate engagements Valspear is bearing a . very muscular" Appearance, "*6nd is thriving on the work allotted him'by F/ Stenning. Several tempting offers have been refused for the good-looking hack, who has not had a very strenuous racing career. The London Sporting Life says that for the week ended April 23 R. J. Colling had the most remarkable run of success ever recorded by a Newmarket trainer in the north. He had runners in 16 races, of which he won 11, and only two of his horses were unplaced. Last year Colling trained 24 winners of 37 races, worth £6076 10s in winning stakes. A rising two-year-old at Ellerslie who gives indications of being an early galloper is the Seigfried—Polonaise colt, Wapaugh, who is being prepared by R. S. Bagby. Wapaugh is a welldeveloped colt, and is a ke£n and natural goer on the track. Wapaugh was .purchased at the Trentham sales by Mr. M. Steinberg for 270gns'., and is a full-brother to Wagner. Fraisette, an English-bred daughter of Valais, was. .not .a success at the stud, but in Potent, the last of her progeny, her name is being retrieved from oblivion.' Potent ran two very good races at the Gi'eymouth meeting on Saturday for a win and a close second to Laud Raid, making his tally for the season four wins a,pd seven minor placings. He is engaged at the Ashburton meeting. As the result of kicking herself on the second day of the Dunedin meeting, Silkwood has been turned out at Riverton. She won three races in line during the autumn, and next season. 1 she is expected to run well over a middle distance. Her dam. Some Form, is a sister to Rin Tin Tin and Charmaine, and half-sister to the Dunedin Cup winner, Tauramai, so breeding supports such expectation. T Land Raid, who had his first preparation from H. Nurse at Riccarton, and who is now owned and trained bv Mr. A. B. Spiers at Kumara, had his first race since Christmas when he won at the Greymouth meeting on Saturday. He is frequently unsound, but has previously proved his ability to well when fresh. Land Raid is a very good-looking gelding and but for his infirmity, he probably would have reached tho highest grade among t}je gallopers. While the horses , were ' paraded the Winter Handicap at Omoto on Saturday there was a very heavy rainfall'. Contract whipped round at, the rise of thfe barrier, taking no part in the jace. Emmeline Girl, the favourite, was in the rear early, but she won in the last stride from Gold Boy. The winner, a four-year-old mare bred of Australian stock, won a race at the Banks Peninsula meeting in her first season, but she showed no. form again until this season, during which she has compiled a record of wins, four seconds and a third. t FUTURE EVENTS AUCKLAND CLUBS' ENTRIES The Auckland Racing Club received 1307 entries for its classic events to be held at future meetings, compared with 1015 last year, an increase or 292. For its four fixed-weight races next season, tho Takapuna Jockey Club received 239 entries, or 114 fewor than 12 months ago.
