NEW WOMEN'S CLUB

EXHIBITION OF ANTIQUES Au exhibition of antiques and novelties was held by members of the New Women's Club on Friday afternoon, additional interest being added to the occasion by an address given by Captain G. Humphreys-Da vies on the history of porcelain. Captain Humphreys - Davies said China was the first 'country to know porcelain. No living person knew when it first appeared on the scene, but it was in common use in that country at least 2000 years ago. Several attempts were made in Europe to produce porcelain, Frederick of Prussia and Augustus of Saxony being particularly active in sponsoring them. It was in endeavouring to make a heat-resisting crucible with white fuller's earth that a chemist, one Bottger, accidentally discovered the piocess. Augustus immediately immured Bottger in a fortress and as a result of his work Meissen or Dresden china was manufactured. In 1750 the making of true Chinese porcelain was achieved. A vote of thanks was accorded Captain Humphreys-Davies for bis adddress after which he examined and commented on the exhibits brought by members of the club. Acting as hostj ess was Mrs. L. Howden. The presiI dent, Mrs. AV. B. Darlow, presided.
