VACANCY ON COUNCIL
PROPOSAL TO LABOUR UNCONTESTED ELECTION CITIZENS' ASSOCIATION MOVE In the endeavour to save the expense of a contested election to *£ the vacancy on the Auckland 3 Council occasioned by the death ot sir George Richardson, the Citizens and Ratepayers' Association has suggested to the Labour Representation Committee that if it refraips from sponsoring a candidate the association will not 'oppose a Labour nominee with a Citizens' candidate should a subsequent byelection be necessary in the life of the present council. - The Labour Representation Commits tee is considering the proposal. It is pointed out that Sir George Richardson was elected 011 a Citizens ticket, but it is unlikely the proposal would have been made had not the vacancy occurred so soon after the main election. The association has already selected Mr. H. J. Butcher as the Citizens' candidate for the vacancy on the council. Mr. Butcher is being officially nominated by Messrs. W. R. Fee, chairman of the Citizens' Association, and J. B. Donald, while 29 other representative citizens have signed his nomination papers in support.
