SOLOMON SUCCESSFUL SPRINT TO HUNTING BLOOD LLANGOLLEN JUST BEATEN The Novice Handicap was run in two divisions, ' Miss Clipper winning the first at double figures from tho littlofanciod Spcarford, who made a largo place return. Lapidarian was slow to begin, Gold Petal running to the front quickly from Hiss Clipper and Slam (rails), who wore together ahead of Devon and Very Glad. Miss Clipper took the lead from Gold Petal entering the straight, and she stayed on to win by a length front Spoarford, who finished strongly. Very Glad was two lengths away third, and Devon was fourth, ahead of Libra, Hessketoon and Lapidarian. Spcarford should improve. In the second division, victory went to the second fancy Ngawiri, who finished strongly to defeat King Silver. Kia Ova reached the front quickly from King Silver and Acella, but gave way after two furlongs to King Silver, who led into the straight from Ngawiri, Hempton and Kia Ora. Ngawiri did well over tho last half-furlong to win by a length and a-half from King Silver. Kia Ora battled on to bo a moderate third, and Midland was fourth ahead of Long Span and Hempton, who showed plenty of pace in tho middle stages, only to tire quickly. Good Finishing Effort It was with a good finishing eii'ort that Gay Sister got up to win the Stewards' Hack Handicap at double figures. Gazeful whipped round at the start and lost a good deal of ground. Strathire and Salesman began smartly, Salesman leading along tho back from Miss Mestor, Strathire, Chikara and Gay Sister, with Sen Acre running up quickly on the outside. Sen Acre assumed command at tho top, to lead into the straight from Salesman, Strathire,' Miss Mestor and Gay Sister." It appearod as if San Acre would win when she straightened up, but Gay Sister came strongly on the outside to defeat her by a short neck. Strathire battled on for third and paid a good place dividend. Salesman faded into fourth, and was followed by Alyth, Mai de Mer and Miss Mestor. Mai de Mer and Alyth failed to run to their Ellorslie form, but lout ground early by being wide out at the start. Sen Acrt> was a little unlucky. Although favourite, Inness Lad was at a good price on the win machine in the Bay of Plenty Steeplechase, which ho won very easily. Inness Lad was near the rear when Electric F lash and Stray Dog were making the pace early, but he pulled to the front about soven furlongs from home, and always aiterwards had the measure of the opposition. The only ones to get near him in tho last half-mile wore Bells of Bow and Loudon, and they had a lceeu tussle for second, London staying tho better to take the placing by a neck. Mio Lumo was a very poor fourth, and Stray Dog was about a furlong away. Lucidus fell just before completing the first round, and Holly Lu was pulled up. Electric Flash fell about half a mile from home, but was well beaten at the time. Inness Lad jumped well and was too good at the weights. Return to Form Showing a return to the good form ho displayed in winning a double at Avondalc in the autumn. Gold Vaals won the Opotiki Handicap in fine style. Johnny Walls and Day AVind were the early leaders and when the field had settled down Day Wind was clear of Te Hai, Johnny Walls, Brown Lap, Miss Lu, Kena and Requiem. Crossing tho top To Hai closed on Day Wind and Gold Vaals moved up quickly. Gold Vaals led into the straight from To Hai, Day Wind, Kena and Requiem and ho went on to win by a length and a-half from Te Hai, with defeated Kena by half a length. Gay Rebel ran his best race for some time to finish fourth ahead of Day Wind, Brown Lap and Miss Lu. Gold Vaals ran right up to his best and won well.

In spite of the fact that he put tip (31b. overweight, the improving Alio Fratollo scored in the Waioeka Hack Handicap, for which Gay Sister, penalised 7lb. for her earlier success, and Bonnie Song were the favourites. Miss Clipper and Strathire were smartest to begin and when tho held had settled down they were tho pacemakers from Mio Fratollo, Paunui, Long Span and Gay Sister. With about three furlongs to go Mio Fratollo assumed command and ho showed tho way into the straight to Long Span. Strathire, Miss Clipper and Gay Sister. In a good finish Mio Fratollo stayed on to win by a length from Long Span, who defeated Gay Sister by a length. Miss Clipper was fourth succeeded by ltaceline and Paunui: The winner looks a likely type to make a jumper. Second Succe'ssive Win The Te Rapa trainer A. C. Jones and tho jockey .J. Day had their second successive win when they scored in the K. S. Williams Memorial Handicap with Solomon, who was at a good price. Solomon jumped out smartly from No. 1 and led all tho way, finishing on strongly • when challenged in tho straight by the each-way favourite Melvanui, who ran an honest race under ilis weight. Hcssketoon, always prominent, battled on for third and Miss Mestor was fourth. Next to finish were King Silver and Orac. Solomon was assisted by tho advantage ho gained round the first turn. Tho second fancy Mai do Mer failed to reproduce his Ellerslio form and faded after being prominent until near tho homo turn. The'improving Inness Lad completed tho unusual feat of winning over hurdles and over country in tho same day when he won tho Otara Hurdles, for which All Irish was an each-way favourite. Jnness Lad was last in a strung-out field over tho first fenco, but he made up ground quickly in the j middle stages and was in front with j All Irish with six furlongs to go. In-1 ness Lad then gained an advantage of! several lengths and was never afterwards troubled, winning by two lengths from All Irish, who went on gamely, j Queen Lu made a creditable showing for third and Floodlight was fourth followed by Kilboris, Killadar and King's Archer. Inness Lad gavo a fine display. The well-supported .Kilberis did not jump well and was steadied by his; weight. Favourite Succeeds Tho each-way favourite Hunting Blood scored narrowly in the Farewell Handicap. Orato and Gay Seton were smartest to begin, but Hunting Blood soon ran through on tho insido to establish a clear lead from Orate, Gay Seton and Farland, who were in close order ahead of Impasto. Hunting Blood showed the way into tho straight sev-* eral lengths clear, but lie just lasted long enough to defeat tho fast-finish-ing Llangollen, who made a fine showing. Orato was responsible for a creditable effort in finishing third and Mangukaha was fourth. Farland was well placed until the turn, but was drifting back when he stumbled and lost his chance completely.
