REMARKABLE ESCAPE
COUPLE IN AEROPLANE CRASH INTO WIRE FENCE [from our OWN' correspondent] MELBOURNE, June 2 An aeroplane nose-dived over the town of Hopetoun .1 few days ago, travelled for some distance upside down, and crashed into a wire fence, but the pilot and a young woman passenger staggered away from the damaged machine suffering only from shock, cuts and abrasions. The pilot was Mr. Con Alfras, ol the Bun Don Cafe, (Hopetoun, and his passenger was Miss Mavis Karle, an employee at the cafe. The aeroplane, a Royal Victorian Aero Club machine, was flying high above the town when the engine cut out. After passing over the residential area, the aircraft went into a nose-dive and then flew upsidedown. Mr. Alfras righted the machine near the ground, but in avoiding telephone wires near the railway, it struck a wire fence and skidded for 22 yards on its side. The blades of the propeller were broken and the wings and portion of the fuselage were crumpled.
