Fast and open football kept a large crowd of spectators excited right up to time, when the Old Bovs team ran out a winner by 13 points to r,. Colmore-Williams, the Old Boys right winger, was the outstanding back, scoring one trv and opening up play for others by Webster and Gunn. Matich converted two tries. Matamata. —The opening games of tho Roigard Cup competition were played at Bedford Park. On the No. 1 ground Hinuera defeated Matamata by 1C to 3, points for the winners being obtained by Penetito and Bellamy (tries) and Campbell (two conversions and two penalty goals), Ralph kicked a penalty goal for Matamata. Patetere and Walton met on No. 2 ground, the latter being successful by 18 points to 8. C. Fawsett scored 15 of the winners' points, made up of two tries, three conversions and a penalty goal. N. Opotikf.—Public Works had a surprise win over City in tho Opotiki Rugby championship competition. City had easily the better of the play in the first half, scoring a converted try and kicking a penalty goal. Public Work's rallied wonderfully in the second spell and over-ran the opposition, scoring five tries, two being converted. ADanui (2), Patterson, Welsh and Collins scored for Public Works. Tairawhiti beat Tai Ilanauru yesterday by 11 points to it, and thus retained the Princo of Wales Cup, the premier Maori Rugby trophy. This is the fourth successive occasion that Tairawhiti has been successful. Tho game ivas played at a fast - pace throughout, a magnificent forward struggle being witnessed, with patches of good back play. At half-time Tai Hanauru was leading by 0 points to 0, tho result of thrco penalty kicks, but in the second half Tairawhiti did most of the attacking, running up 14 points. Broughton (Taranaki) kicked three penalties for Tai Hanauru. P. Kutia (Poverty Bay) scored two tries for Tairawhiti, and Tuhoro (East Coast) one. S. Jackson (Hawke's Bay) kicked a penalty and converted one try.
