GOVERNMENT CRITICISED

ADDRESS BY MR. COATES WELCOME AT KAUKAPAKAPA An enthusiastic welcome was accorded the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, M.P. for Kaipara, when he addressed a gathering of over 200 people in the Kaukapakapa Hall on Friday night. He was accompanied by his wife and daughter. In the course of his address, Mr. Coates criticised the heavy expenditure of the Government on public works, and suggested that a great deal of this money could be spent more profitably on land development. Referring to the guaranteed price, Mr. Coates pointed out that 17 per cent of the dairy produce of the Dominion was sold for internal consumption at Id per lb. below London parity, which represented a loss to the producer. The only way in which the standard of living could be raised was to increase the quantity of exports, said Mr. Coates. When the Prime Minister talked of insulating New Zealand from overseas conditions it was evident that he did not understand the elementary rules of economics.

At the close of the meeting, a vote of thanks and confidence in the speaker was carried by acclamation.
