LOCAL BODY REFORM

AMALGAMATION PROPOSALS MORE EVIDENCE TO BE HEARD [by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Saturday The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, stated to-day that tho Parliamentary Committee which heard evidence on the Local Government (Amalgamation Schemes) Bill, would be set up again during the coming session of Parliament with the object of reviving the bill and hearing further evidence. Mr. Parry said* there was no hurry for the bill, which was, an important measure. He wanted tho best possible legislation to do the job which he believed should be done. There was a strong body of public opinion in favour of local body reform, added the Minister, and certain stops that had been taken since tho introduction of ,the bill by some local bodies that had expressed their opposition to the idea led him to feel that they now recognised the necessity for reform.
