TAURANGA PROSPECTS

TO-DAY'S EVENTS

REVIEW OF FIELDS WIN AND PLACE BETTING BAY OF PLENTY STEEPLES CHANCE FOR BELLS OF BOW The win and place system of betting will be used at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Tauranga to-day, when the chief-events will 1)0 the Bay ol' Plenty Steeplechase and the Opotiki Handicap. Owing to the large number of acceptors, 21, for the Novice Handicap, it is probable that the race will have to be run in two divisions, which will bo necessary if the safety number of 16 is exceeded. In the event of the divisions being necessary, the total ; prize-money will be increased to £l4O, the winner of each division to receive £55, second £lO and third £5. The weather was fine at Tauranga yesterday and the course is to be in good order for the time of the year. Following are details of the fields, with a review of the prospects in each race by "Archer":— 10.45—NOVICE HANDICAP, Of £140; 6 fur. First Division. Second Division st- lb. st. lb 81am 9 1 Long Span . 813 Very Glad . . 8 13 Kia Ora ... 8 7 Hessketoon ..86 King Silver . 8 6 Libra .... 8 8 Xgawiri ... 8 6 Lapidarian ..83 Acella .... 8 0 Devon . ..." 8 0 Forlorn ... 8 0 Gold Petal . 8 0 Hempton ..80 Kotahi Aero . 8 0 Midland 8 0 Miss Clipper . 8 0 Miss Dawn . 8 0 Spearford . r 8 0 Te Monoplane 8 0 Wild Acre 8 0 Few of the candidates have any form and there are more than a few unknown quantities. Of those drawn in the first division, Slam, who has been placed seven times this season, has the best credentials. However, his form has been only moderate. ..His last placing was when he finished third to. Advance Acre and British Nation at Tauranga in March. Very Glad has been placed, but has failed in his three starts this season. Probably he will be all the better for his recent racing. Hessketoon ran creditable races at the Great Northern meeting at Ellerslie and should be assisted by his solid condition. Lapidarian has shown promise and Devon is an improver who galloped well at Te -- Rapa on Thursday. Spearford, a halfbrother to A'warere and Marechal, has pace and may go well. Of those in the second division, the best form is represented by Long Span and Kia Ora, who have both been placed. Kia Ora was twice second at the combined hunt - meeting at Now Plymouth in September. K>ng Silver ran two thirds at the March meeting at Tauranga, and Ngawiri, who is very speedy, was third in the Putaruru Stakes at Matamata to Jayola and Kaspian. Midland, a half-brother to Scotch Nation, has shown pace and Hempton is a full-brother to Te Monowai. Kotahi Acre is bred to go fast and the same applies to Forlorn. There may be good support for: First Division — • HESSKETOON. DEVON. Second Division—- ' ' NGAWIRI, 3«DLAND. 11.30—STEWARDS' HANDICAP. C 'Of £130; 7 fur. • st.lb. Bt. lb. Strathire ... 9 8 Senacro ... 8 8 Blue Needle 9 8 Raceline ... 8 2 Bonny Song . 9 1 Chikara .... 8 1 Mai de Mer 9 0 Racing Lady 8 0 Salesman. 8 12. Gazeful .... 8 0 Gay Sister . 8 11 Miss Mestor . 8 0 Alyth ... 8,10 Blue Needle has not raced just recently; but has performed well on the course previously. Strathire has failed in his latest races, but was third, to Forest Acre and May Song at Paeroa in March. Bonnie Song has registered a _ first and a third in her last two starts, recording the third behind Brown Lap and High Sea at Matamata. Mai de Mer is in winning form and Salesman also scored on the flat at Ellerslie just recently. Alyth ran third to Bright Idea and Silver Glow at Ellerslie and on that form should be dangerous. Gay Sister and Senacre are possibilities in the class and Raceline, who is more solid than formerly, may be a dangerous lightweight. Popular fancies may be - MAL DE MER, ALYTH, RACELINE.

12.15—8 AY OF PLENTY STEEPLES, Of £2.=>o; about IV, miles v ' ' st. lb. Bt. lb. Lucidus . . . 1,1 11 Bells of Bow 0 5 Mio Lume . 10 10 Holly Lu ..92 London . . . 10 5 Electric Flash 9 1 Inness Lad .. 10 2 Stray Dog . 9 0 Consistency has been a feature of the latest form of Lucidus and he should take beating even though ho has a big weight. Mio Lume failed among the hurdlers at Ellerslie but goes better over country. London fell at his last start but ran, a first and a second in his two previous efforts. Inness Lad is also engaged in the Otara Hurdles but should go very well if started, as he is fit and his two seconds to Full of ■Scotch at Ellerslie wero good efforts. Bella of Bow looked like winning the Tamaki Steeplechase at Ellerslie when she fell at the last fence and on that running .should be very troublesome. Electric Flash showed much promise last season and Holly Lu won over hurdles at Ellerslie at Christmas, since when he has been a failure. If started, Inness Lad may be favourite, but if he is absent there may bo most support for BELLS OF BOW, LONDON, MIO LUME. I.O—OPOTIKI HANDICAP, Of £250; Wa miles St. lb. et. lb. Airam . . .90 Brown Lap . 8 2 Day "Wind . 812 Gay Rebel . . 710 Miss Lu . . 811 Te Hai - . . 7 9 Gold Vaals . 8 8 Requiem ... 7 8 Light Comedy 8 2 Johnny Walls 7 8 Kena 8 2 Bracket: Gold Vaals and Johnny Walls. On the strength of her good form in the autumn, Airam is likely to have many friends. Day Wind,' who will claim an apprentice's allowance, is in a class that should suit him and Miss Lu has to be respected on account of her fine record on tho course. Gold Vaals should havo a chance to make amends for his defeats at Ellerslie, although ho would appeal more over a shorter course. The same applies to Johnny Walls. Brown Lap was a winner at Mataniata and Kena won at Otaki. Both should go well, especially Kena, who is very fit. Light Comedy may be all tlip better for her racing at Ellerslie and should go well in this olass. Gay Rebel seems to bo thriving on his racing .and may strike form at any time. To Hai has raced well on the course previously and Requiem is an improver who should do better under ~the lighter scale of weights than she . "id at Ellerslie. Her last success was gained when she she defeated Jack Tar ft Hawora in Mav. The favourites may KENA, LIGHT COMEDY, REQUIEM.

I.4S—WAIOEKA HANDICAP. Of 1:120; I milo St. lb Bt. lb. Gay Rebel and Requiem should go well if reserved and Bonnie | Song should also have prospects. | Strathire and Gay Sister are' possibilij ties, but at the weights they may be ! held safely by Race lino, who is on the I improve. Mio Fratollo is another on the improve and he may go verv well. Long Span and Paunui may be best of the others. Some who may bo in demand | are RACELINE, MIO FRATOLLO, BONNIE SONG. 2.30 K. S. WILLIAMS MEMORIAL HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. Of £150: l 'milo st. lb gt. lb. Hunting Mars 10 0 Alyth .... 8,10 Brown Lap lo 0 Solomon ... 8 0 Melvanui 913 Miss Mcstor s 0 Orac . . 930 Hessketoon 8 0 Mai de Mer 9 0 King Silver 8 0 Brown Lap and Hunting Mars are good in this class when in form, and Melvanui is a fine weight-carrier who should go well. Orac has no recent form, but should make a forward showing in this company. Mai de Mer should talco a lot of beating if started, and the same applies to Alyth. Both are engaged earlier. The likeliest of the others may be/ Solomon, whose speed should take him a long way. The main fancies may be MAL DE MER, ALYTH, ORAC. 3.IS—OTARA HURDLES, Of £200; 1 3 / A miles L st. lb. fit. !b. Kings Archer 11 13 Count All Irish . . 11 0 Rousillon 9 0 Kilberis ... 10 11 Chief Lap ..90 Inness Lad . . 912 Jan Ridd ..00 Ivilladar ... 9 8 Floodlight ..90 Mio Lumo . . 9 1 . Air ComSimint . . 9 1 modore 9 0 Holly Lu .91 Solomon ... 9 0 Queen Lu . 9 0 Salesman. ..90 King's Archer and All Irish should run good races even with their big weights and Kilberis, who won on the last day on Ellerslie, is in fine form. Inness Lad ran two good seconds to Full of Scotch at Ellerslie and on. that form should take a lot of heating. Killadar had four hard races at Ellerslie, but should have prospects if he has freshened up. Holly Lu, Simint and Mio Lume are capable of creditable performances and the likeliest of the others are Count Roussillon, Jan Ridd and Floodlight. The best supported may be INNESS LAD, KILBERIS, ALL IRISH. 4.O—FAREWELL HANDICAP, Of £2OO . 6 fur. Bt. lb. st. lb. Llangollen . 912 Pa lustre ... 8 4 Inipasto . . 9 10 Hunting Blood 8 4 Gay Seton . 9 0 Te Hai ... 8 0 Farland . ..! 812 Mangukaha . 8 0 Hunting Mars 8 12 Blue Needle . 8 0 Orate ... 8 9 Hempton ... 80 Miss Lu . . 8 8 Acella .... 8 0 Day Wind ..87 The left-handed way of going should suit the speedy Hunting Blood, and he is likely to take a lot of beating. Farland, who won at Te .Rapa, should make his presence felt. Llangollen has not raced since the autumn meeting at Avondale, and Impasto has been off the scene for some months. Orate should have prospects, and Palustre may also run well. The best of the others may Mangukaha, who relishes soft going, Te Hai, and Miss Lu. Some who may De in demand are HUNTING BLOOD, FARLAND, ORATE.
