Blue Cowslips

The Lungworts (Pulmonarias), commonly called the blue cowslip, aro very attractivo in tho spring months when there are few flowers of a blue shade available. These may be transplanted now, and those have already a few plants can increase them by lifting and separating into rooted pieces, then replanting. The loaves of pulmonarias are attractivo in themselves, more especially those which aro produced after the blooms havo faded. At that time they have the appearance one would expect from a plant accustomed to grow in moist grourtd. They look quite natural when planted round or near a lily pool. In a warm, sheltered position the flowers of pulinonaria arvensis frequently appear in July, but the usual blooming period is August and September. The plant is capable of thriving in any soil, but gives the best results in a shady position. In the rock parden the ideal situation is one that is sheltered by a large overhanging rock. The compact habit of the plant also makes it very suitable for edgings, the mottled foliage having quite a distinct appearance. For this purpose the variety known as pulinonaria mollis should be used, as this has more attractive foliage than 6ome of the others."
