\ qiviq theatre ; Tho outstanding .cast headed by such Bayers as Tyrone Power, Alico Fay and oil Atoeche is a feature of tile entertaining film "lii Old Chicago," wliich Will be presented- to patrons of the Civic Theatre to-day. The story deals mainly with the life of the O'Leary family, tho role;/ of tho brothers being taken by l'ower. Amcche and Tom Drown. Power is well cast as the -second O'Loary boy, Diori, giving a subtle and imaginative interpretation of liis character. Dion was the most successful of the brothers but lie used his .power in the, politics of the city in an-underhand way. Don Amecho appears. as Dion's elder brother ,> -who Was the mayor at the time of tin) lire of 1871. The excellent supporting cast includes Alice Brady and Andy'DoviiiO; Thb great fire; which destroyed much Of the city, provides a fitting climax and tho many spectacular scefies of tho flames sweeping through the streets contribute largely to make the film excellent entertainment. An interesting supporting programme, including a film dealing with Hitler's visit to Home, will also bo presented. '

REGENT THEATRE The beautiful tropical scenery of Malaya is seen to advantage in the technicolour production "Her Junglo Love," which will continue its successful season at the Begent Theatre today. Dorothy Lamour, who will be remembered for her fine performance m "Tho Hurricane," is prominently cast and appears as a white girl brought up by the natives on an island in the East Indies. A young aviator Bay Milland is forced off his course and lands on Miss Lamour's island. Although Miss Lamour is regarded by the natives as a goddess, the jealous chieftain de* cides to sacrifice them to his crocodiles. The film is brought to a satisfactory conclusion when a timely earthquake shakes the island as they are about to be thrown in the pool. ST. JAMES' THEATRE Tho beauty of rural Spain and tho gaiety and pageantry of its cities provide a charming background to the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical production "The Firefly," which will continue its season at St. James' Theatre to-day. Jeanette Mac Donald and Allan Jones appear together on the screen for tho first time and are heard in several beautiful numbers from the original Friml composition, including ''Love is Like a Firefly" and "Gianina Mia." The story deals with Spam dur J ing the Peninsular War, when she was attempting to free herself from the Napoleonic tyranny and Miss MacDonald has the role of the Firefly, the Spanish dancer and singer, who becomes a spy for her country. The supporting cast includes Warren William and Billy Gilbert.

MAYFAIR THEATRE

The thrilling picture "Mademoiselle Docteur," describing tlie life of a Frehch nurse, portrayed by Dita Parlb, who joined tlio German Secret Service at the beginning of the Great War, will be presented at the Mayfair Theatre to-day. The death of her lover leads the nurse on to further efforts* not because of patriotism, but in tnd hope of finding the man who killed himi She is then sent to Salonica, wherb she poses as a helper of the lied Cfoss in order to gain information about the movements of British troops. While stationed at the hospital she falls in love with a British officer whom her superiors intend the nurse to question. The officer discovers the real identity of the nurse, but before disclosing the evidence he is bounded, and just before lie loses consciousness ho urges her to escape.

EMBASSY THEATRE The entertaining production "Thor-. oughbreds Don't Cry" will be presented to patrons of the Embassy Theatre todav. The voting New Zealautl actot Ronald Sinclair is given his first big rble aiid makes the most of it, giving a fine portrayal of the English boy linger. Roger and his grandfather, Sir Petet Cah-etton, travel to America in an attempt to win the American Derby and their fortunes. The horse fads in its preliminary race and Sir Peter dies from heart failure, leaving Roger to prepare for the big race. Roger carries on and with the help of a young jockey (Mickey Rooney), is successful lh winning the Derby. Other roles in the film are well-handled by Judy Garland, the girl singer, C. Aubrey Smith and Sophie Tucker. Two newsreels and an "Our Gang" comedy are included oh the excellent associate programme to be presented. STRAND THEATRE Excellent photography of scenes showing the customs ana glamour of the ancient East, combined with the fine portrayal by Gary Cooper of the historic Marco Polo tend to make the film "The Adventures of Marco Polb, Which will bo shown at the Strand Theatre to-day, one of the mbst popular to appear in Auckland for some time. The first use of gunpowder in warfare after the Chinese had used it lor years as a toy, and its results in defeating the armies fighting againfct the great Kublai Khan produce art effective and interesting scene in tins production. Sigrid Gurie, a newcomer to the filins, appears in the cast with Alan Hale and linsil Ratlibone. Jhe usual supporting programme will also be shown.

ROXY AND TIVOLI THEATRES A bright double-feature programme will be presented to patrons of the Roxy and Tivoli Theatres to-day, when "Law of the Underworld" and the comedv "Venus Makes Trouble" will be shown. In the former. Chester Morris is ideally suited for the role ot a determined criminal, Gene 1' lllmore. who poses as a wealthy member of society, a part which necessitates versatile acting. Richard Bond afid Anne Shirley have the part 9 of a romantic young couple whose dreams of marriage are broken when they are caught in the intrigues o£ Fillmore's crime circle. They are later caught by the police as slispects ill a murder case and, although they are entirely innocent, they refuse, to expose Fillmore, Who is also under suspicion. He later confesses, however, and brings the filtn to a delightful ending. The second attraction describes the aUventtires of a business promoter, successfully portrayed by James Dunn, who attempts to build a :model city but his plans are frustrated when he discovers the building site is only a swatnp. The district attorney accuses Duiin of- fraud,' which he evaded by describing the bililding of an "American Venice" on the site and has the jurors pleading for 1 Shares instead of convicting him. The supporting cast includes Patricia Ellis, Gene Morgan and Thurston Hall.

CAPITOL THEATRE The well-knowh radio comedian Sandy Powell, appears in the hilarious comedy "Can You Hear Me, Mother?" which will be presented, at the Capitol Theatre to-day. "Crimsbn Romance," in which the leading parts are taken by Ben Lyon and Sari Maritza is the second attraction. TUDOR CINEMA Alice Faye has the leading role in the bright musical comedy "You're a Sweetheart," which will be presented with a fine supporting programme at the Tudor Cinema to-night. The supporting bast in the main attraction lhcludes Charles Winninger and George Murphy. BERKELEY, MISSION BAY Appearing in the bright comedy "The Awful Truth,?' to be presented at the Berkeley Theatre, Mission Bay, to-day, are Irene Dunne and Carv Grant. Asta, a dog which is a newcomer to the screen, also appears in many delightful scenes. ALEXANDRA THEATRE The entertaining programme to be presented to-day at the Alexandra Theatre includes the films "King Solomon's Mines" and "40 Naughty Girls." Paul Robeson appears in the first attraction. PRINCESS THEATRE Jon Hall and Dorothy Lamour have the main roles in "The Hurricane." which will be shown to-day at the Princess Theatre in conjunction with "There Goes the Grooih." , adelpHi theatre the entertaining film "Stage Door," in which Ginger Rogers and Katharine Hepburn appear, will be shown to-day at the Aaelphi Theatre.
