OBITUARY

MR. ROBERT SALTER Tlie death occurred yesterday of Mr. Robert Salter, of Heme Bay, in his 85th year. Born in Liverpool, Mr. Salter followed a seafaring career for many years and travelled extensively. He served his apprenticeship with the Liverpool White Star Line, and about 1879 went to Melbourne in the ship Alice Piatt. Transferring to the Ringaroomp, he came to New Zealand and for a number of years served with the Northern Steamship Company on various coastal vessels. In 1883 Mr. Salter married Miss Matilda Sainty, daughter of the late Captain Cardinal Sainty, who was deputy-harbourmaster and pilot at Auckland for 29 years. On leaving the sea, Mr. Salter was employed by Holland and Butler, and later by J. Wiseman and Sons. He retired about 20 years ago. He is survived by his wife and four children.

MR. J. MILDENHALL The death has occurred, after a short illness, of Mr. James Mildenhall, of Huntly South. Born 60 years ago at Wellington, the deceased had resided in the Huntly and Pukemiro districts, where he had been connected with mining activities, up to the time of his death. Mr. Mildenhall was vicepresident of the Huntly branch of the Labour Party, and also of the Raglan Labour Representation Committee. Ho is survived by his wife, four sons and one daughter. MR. JAMES HOOPER [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday The death has occurred in Hamilton of Mr. 'James Hooper, aged 75 years. The deceased held farming properties in South Taranaki and' at Taneatua, where he remained until he retired in 1931 to como to Hamilton. Mrs. Hooper died in 1921. Mr. Hooper was a keen follower of Rugby football in the Waikato district and his sons Were prominent in Hamilton and Waikato football. He is survived by five sons and six daughters. There are 34 grandchildren and four great-grand-children. MR. J. ALLEN [by telegraph;—OWN correspondent] DARGAVILLE, Friday The death has occurred in the Northern Wairoa Hospital at Te Kopuru of Mr. Joseph Allen, aged 72, the oldest bullock driver in the North. Born at Hamilton, Mr. Allen settled in Northern Wairoa at an early age and had followed bush work and bullock driving over since. He held the distinction of giving an exhibition of bullock driving and hauling of kauri loos before the Duke of Gloucester at Nelson's Bush, and with his bullock te«tm and waggon took part # in a special transport procession in Dargaville shortly before Easter. Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, six daughters and three sons. MISS M. FARQUHARSON [fkom our own correspondent] OTOfcOHANGA. Friday I'he death has occurred of Miss Merron Farquharson, a teacher at the secondary department of the Te Kuiti Distript High School. Miss Farquharson was recently granted pick leave and left for the South Island, her death ocourring at Balclutha. She was a sister of Mr. ,Robert Farquharson, a Rhodes Scholar, and was educated at the Mornington School, Dunedin. She graduated as M.A. with honours from the Otago University. Miss Farquharson taught Southland, Christchurch and Dannevirke before coming to Te Kuiti.
