CHILD WELFARE FIGURES

An increase of 35 juvenile delinquents last year, compared with the previous year, was reported by the senior welfare officer in Auckland, Mr. J. S. Cupit, in his annual report „to the Children's Court yesterday. He stated that nearly all tho delinquency charges were for theft or kindred offences, although tbofts showed a decrease of 20.

There were 374 cases for the year ended March 31, the report stated, against 339 last year, 54 being girls. Children of pre-school age accounted for 36, primary school 129, secondary school 31, 135 were working and 43 unemployed, Juvenile delinquency was not confined to any particular district, but was fairly generally scattered. The number of children who appeared a second time was 13, which seemed to indicate that the Court was following the proper course of treatment for such cases.
