DEFENCES OF ENGLAND PROVIDING FOR EMERGENCY The threat of war in Eurbpe and the possible invasion, of England were beinft discussed 50 years ago. The followingi an extract from the New Zealah Herald of June 11, 1888: — "The Hon. Stanhope, Secretary oj State for War, has ordered the voluo teer force to be brigaded "to facilitate the mobilisation of the: army in tit event of an, emergency. "Lord Wolseley asserts that a consensus of opinion exists among naval and military authorities that with the facilities now offered by steam ind tail, coupled with the almost defenceless condition of the coast and the insufficient strength of the fleet, England might be invaded."
