MISSION BAY DOMAIN
NO FUNDS FOR LIGHTING NOT CONSIDERED NECESSARY The Parks Committee of the City Council is unable to provide funds in the current estimates for the lighting !of Selwyn Domain, as requested some months ago by Mission Bay shopkeepers, and the council last night decided that no action be taken. The superintendent of parks, Mr. T. Aldridge, reported that in his opinion the lighting scheme was not necessary or desirable, it would serve no purpose, but rather would destroy the quietness and solitude which the reserve provided. He said that during the summer months, adjacent to the Domain, sideshows and other amusements were on the increase, and "a great racket" was experienced, much to the annoyance of visitors. Furthermore, the bathing sheds and parking area were usually closed at 8 p.m. It appeared to him that if the area was to be floodlit, it should be done on the lines followed in Australia and on tho Continent, and some forms of amusement, as well as a tea kiosk, should be added as sources of revenue.
