DAIRY GUARANTEE SHIFTING RESPONSIBILITY DEFINITE ANNOUNCEMENT DISTRIBUTION OF SURPLUS c [by TELEGRAM —PRESS association] WELLINGTON, Thursday The definite intention of the Government to hand over the responsibility of fixing the guaranteed price to a tribunal presided ovec by a Supreme Court Judge was made clear to-day by tlio Prime Minister, Mr. Savage. In an interview Mr. Savage recalled his recent offer to the Farmers' Union conference, which had been accepted. If they did nob want a tribunal of this sort, now was the time to make themselves heard, ho said. Mr. Savage added that the tribunal would ielic\e the Government of all responsibility in fixing the price, except that the Go\ eminent would be represented on that tribunal The farmers, no doubt, would be satisfied with the price fixed by the tribunal. "We will expect them to be, in any case."
Mr. Savage said the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, had been accused of "letting the cat out of the bag" with regard to the tion of the Dairy Industry Account, lhere was no cat in the bag, said Mr. Savage. It had been plainly stated all along that in the first season there was no surplus to distribute, and the farlike other taxpayers, shared the loss. This season there was likely to be a surplus in the fund, and the farmers would get it.
