DAY OF ANNIVERSARIES
ROYAL VISIT RECALLED RICHARD SEDDON'S DEATH Three anniversaries of unusual interest fall to-day—those of a Royal visit to the Dominion, tho disastrous Tarawera eruption, and tho death of Richard John Seddon. Thirty-tfeven years ago to-day the late King George V. and Queen Mary, then the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, arrived in Auckland on tho Royal yacht Ophir. Their Royal Highnesses disembarked the following day and were given a tumultuous welcome. A reception was held at Government House in tho evening, and the general Xjyiblic was entertained with a fireworks 'fhe^32nd anniversary of the death of Seddon also falls to-day. Premier of New Zealand from 1893 until his death in 1906, his term of office is the longest in the Dominion's history. Ho died at sea while returning on tho steamer Oswestry Grange after a visit to Australia, and he was buried in the Sydney Street Cemetery, Wellington. Tho anniversary which brings the most poignant memories is that of the Tarawera eruption in 1886, when 153 lives were lost, whole Maori villages i wiped out and the famous Pink and NVhito Terraces destroyed.
