AFTER 20 YEARS' RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE NOW INTRODUCES ■if* I PRODUCED BY AN EXCLUSIVE SOLVENT-REFINING PROCESS The NEW Shell Motor Oil is the outstanding and unique achievement of Shell scientists after 20 years' pioneering research and experience, bringing to perfection a solvent-refining process which revolutionizes preconceived ideas of oil refining. THE PROBLEM . The problem was to develop a perfect oil-one with the following properties fully represented and balanced, which hitherto had puzzled the best brains of petroleum research: Free flow at all temperatures to facilitate starting and give instant distribution to moving parts. Minimum carbon-forming tendency. Stability under heat to prevent formation of sludge or gummy residue. Economy of consumption. Tough oil film that retainsJts strength at high working temperatures. ' High degree of lubricating power. Mineral petroleum is recognized as the best base from which to derive lubricants suited to modern requirements. Treatment is necessary to remove all undesirable bodies that tend to break down into impurities such as carbon and sludge. SOLVENT-REFINING . Solvent-refining is the modern and most satisfactory way of achieving this separation. Experience and mathematical/precision of control are needed to keep the delicate balance between under-refining (which means only partial removal of carbon and sludge-forming bodies) and overrefining, which yields motor oil too weak and unstable to withstand tne fierce mechanical stresses met with in the car of today. NEW REFINERY.The new refinery at Shell Haven, Essex, England, specially built to produce the NEW Shell Motor Oil, is the most modern and efficient solvent-refining plant in the world today. NEW PROCESS. When the solvent is mixed with the unrefined lubricating oil it dissolves out all those constituents in the oil which break down when heated and form carbon and sludge. The mixing process is a complicated one. taking place in fourteen separate stages, until there is a complete separation of refined oil and impurities. The solvent is recovered from both the oil and the impurities. EXCLUSIVE SHELL TREATMENT, a further stage of treaty ment exclusive to Shell is the addition of an oiliness concentrate. When an oil has this "oiliness" property, the molecules cling tenaciously to metal surfaces. By adding a small percentage or this oiliness extract to the highly refined oils obtained by the solvent process, their inherent oiliness is greatly increased - enabling the film of oil to withstand unusually severe pressures and prevents it from draining or being washed Off metal surfaces, even when hot. DRY-STARTING.The NEW Shell Motor Oil prevents metal-to-metal contact which with ordinary oils so often causes serious engine wear. Starting a cold engine from rest, and unless it is protected by an oil film, inevitably means metal-to-metal contact between the moving surfaces. This goes on until the oil pumped from the sump is in full circulation-not necessarily a long time-but long enough to cause a great deal of wear and tear and this happens enougn to cause a great aeai or wear ana tear ana tms Happens each time of starting. The NEW Shell Motor Oil provides oilprotection from the very instant of starting even if the engine has been long left idle. MOTOR MANUFACTURERS MOST IMPRESSEftEvery known test was applied to the NEW Shell Oil. Engines were assembled by leading manufacturers, run in on the NEW Shell Oil and driven for ten thousand miles and more each over public roads. After this the engines were stripped and closely inspected at the works. It is a striking fact that the motor manufacturers were most impressed by the revolutionary qualities of the NEW oil. There is only one further test that Shell can suggest that you should give the NEW Shell Oil-a trial in your car and prove all the claims to your own satisfaction.
