SEINE FISHING BOAT
NEW DESIGN INCORPORATED LAUNCHING CEREMONY TO-DAY Designed on entirely new lines to provide better balance and greater convenience for the crew, a 50ft. seine fishing boat has been built at a cost of £4OOO by Charles Bailey and Son, Limited, for Tauranga Fisheries, Limited. The boat will be launched from the boatbuilders' slipway this afternoon, after being blessed by the Rev. Dr. L. T. Buxton and christened the Katoa by Mrs. J. W. Costello, the wife of one of the directors of the purchasing firm. The Katoa was designed by Mr. James Jurie, who is in partnership with Mr. Costello, of Rotorua, and Mr. John Baxter, of Taurapga. The boat has a beam of 14ft. and a draught of 7ft. Contrary to general practice the living quarters are provided aft and there is sufficient accommodation for six persons. The cabin is equipped with electricity and a bottled gas stove, a radio receiver and wardrobes. Amidships there is a fish locker capable of holding 300 baskets, or approximately 15 tops of fish. Immecliately forward of this locker is the engine room, fitted with an 88 horsepower Diesel engine, which is electrically started. A bathroom is, provided in the bow of the boat. Another feature is a mechanical winch, with lifting power of four tons. Mr. Jurie said yesterday that the boat • would be more seaworthy than the usual type of fishing launch, as the re-arrangement of quarters would eliminate any tendency for the bow to drag, while steering would be more efficient in all weathers and conditions. It is understood that since the construction of the Katoa two fishing boats of former type have been redesigned at an additional cost of about £7OO, and another new boat of similar plan'to the Katoa is on order.
