TRIUMPH OF OUTSIDERS

VICTORY OF CHEVAL DE VOLEE SALESMAN AT LONG ODDS ' V Some good dividends were returned at the opening of the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Ellerslie yesterday when Hirangi was the only favourite to score. The day opened > disastrously for investors when the favourite Young Paddon was hopelessly left in the first division of the Jervois Handicap and the little-fancied Salesman won at double figures. The lightweight Cheval de Volee paid only a little less than Salesman when he narrowly defeated Valmint in a hard finish Jn the Cornwall Handicap. Other winners to make good returns were Mai de Mer, Prince Acre and Full of Scotch, The Great Northern Hurdles provided a splendid contest, and in an exciting finish Erination won from the favourite Huskie and the topweight Jolly Beggar. The time 4-42 was only a second outside the race record established by Prince of Orange in the sensational contest two years ago when Clarion Call lost his rider at the last fence when well clear of the field. Glorious weather attracted a holiday atteridance of 30,000 compared with 19,000 on the first day last year, which was a Saturday. The totalisator handled £79,474 for eight races against £50,341 for seven races on the first day last year, an increase of £29,133.
