RABBITS IN AUSTRALIA A proposal by M. Louis Pasteur 50 years ago to. introduce a disease w. Australia to combat the growing rabbit menace met with strong opposition. Tn e following is an extract from the Net Zealand Herald of June 7, 1888: "The English Anti-Vivisection Society has, through the Agent-General,trtrt the Government of Australia• the introduction of M. Pasteur s rab i disease into the colony, on the gr° un that it would be fatal to birds, and that the wholesale slaughter of rabbi is inimical to the health of human beings. The society states it has tase tin* opinion of several medical men the question, and they say reason to fear an outbreak of from rabbits killed bv cholera.
