HOCKEY TOUR

ENGLISH WOMEN ARRIVAL IN AUCKLAND SOME OUTSTANDING PLAYERS Claimed to bo one ol the strongest international teams yet sent abroad the All England women's hockey team arrived by the Remuera yesterday to make a tour of New Zealand. The team comprises ]6 members, of which Miss E. J. Warwick is manager-umpire. Most of the players are schoolteachers or games mistresses, some aro employed in offices and have given up their jobs for the tour, whilo others have been engaged with home duties. Although many suffered illness during a stormy Atlantic crossing all are now fit and well, the result of physical drill and other exercises during the voyage. The members of the team have played only one game together, this being in London tho day before they sailed, when they defeated the Rest of England by one goal to nil. Experienced Captain Outstanding among the players is the captain, Miss M. M. Knott, who has beep an English international for 13 years and has captained England for the past six. Miss Knott has led English- teftms on tours in the United States and South Africa, as well as in Continental countries, including Germany. Another notable player is the vice-captain, Miss M. C. Collins, an international of four years' standing, who has played in tho United States and Germany. Two other internationals are Miss J. L. O'Donoghue and Miss M. J. Lodge, both of whom obtained their "caps" last season. Nearly all tho other players have represented one of the five territories into which England is divided for hockey competitions. Long Association with Game The manager-umpire, Miss Warwick, has had a long association with hockey, having visited Australia in 1927 and the Continent in 1934 with English teams. The team left for Ilotorua yesterday and will play a practice game against a Rotorua ladies' team to-day. The first official match of the tour will be against Waipa at Te Awamutu on Thursday. The visitors will meet Auckland next Saturday at Eden Park. The personnel of the team is as follows: —Misses M. M. Knott, M. C. Collins. B. Fairgrieve, N. E. Judd, M. J. Lodge, J. L. O'Donoghue, E. Shelmerdine, J. F. Wright, J. E. Bowling, G. Huggins, I. I. Naylor, E. M. Rathbone, K. Thompson. B. W. West, 0. M. Barnes and E. J. Warwick.
