PEACE PROPOSALS

INTERNATIONAL TRADE FIXED EXCHANGE RATE An address entitled "New Proposals as a Basis for Peace" was given by Mrs. S. V. Irwin at a meeting of the new Women's Club 011 Friday, over which Mrs. W. B. Darlow presided. Mrs. Irwin said that natural resources nud production were the real wealth of the community, and that money, which was nothing in itself, had become master instead of remaining the servant of these.

Stressing the confusion resulting from all countries having a different currency and rate of exchange when it came to international trading, Mrs. Irwin urged aupport of the proposals which had been put forward by the London Chamber of Commerce in J931, but had been persistently shelved by interested parties ever Bince. These carefully considered proposals put forward by such a conservative body as the London Chamber of Commerce had much to commend them, continued Mrs. Irwin. Thcv advocated a fixed rate of exchange botween nations and a central trading bank in each country, with an international clearing house in control of all. . All transactions had to be made in goods. Any surplus should be taken out in travelling credits, to enable the ordinary folk of the various countries to understand each other better, a proceeding which would materially help the cause of international friendship and world peace.
