RACES AT SHOWS
SUGGESTION FAVOURED REQUEST FOR PERMITS AGRICULTURAL CONFERENCE A remit that the Racing Conference should be requested to amend the rules of racing to permit hack racing of unregistered horses and riders at agricultural shows caused considerable dis* mission at the annual conference of Agricultural and Pastoral Associations of the Auckland Province yesterday. ; The chairman, Mr. S. Austin Carr, pre- | sided. The suggestion was made by Mr. C. i P. Butler, representing the Whangarei i'association, who said that one of the main objects of an agricultural show ! was to foster the spirit of sportsmanship and the breeding of good horses. He pointed out that sports bodies were able to hold races of this nature, whilo unregistered • trotting horses were allowed to compete in races. Several members expressed opinions that rough and inexperienced riders would take part in such races and there was a strong possibility of numerous accidents. It was suggested that bookmakers and other undesirable characters would frequent the shows, and the competition of disqualified horses and jockeys could not be stopped. " If this remit is carried, it will not convert every show into a race meeting, ns is suggested," Mr, Butler stated. " Permits will bo granted only to associations with good reputations." The remit was carried with a few dissentients. Dates for shows throughout the Auckland Province during 1938 and 19.39 were fixed. Reference was made to the Waikato Royal Show, to be held on October 27, 28 and 29, and a motion by the chairman that the meeting should convey to the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association its heartiest support and should pledge itself to make the show the finest in New Zealand, was carried.
