NAVAL RACE
HUGE BATTLESHIPS BRITISH _DECISION ANSWER TO JAPAN USE OF 18-INCH GUNS SQUADRON OF FTVE By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON. May 31 During the past six weeks Britain has repeatedly sought a gesture from Tokio that the Japanese would not exceed the 35,000-ton battleship limit, the Australian Associated Press understands. The Japanese, however, have not given the slightest indication of such intentions. Consequently, a supplementary Estimate, to be tabled in the House of Commons to-day, includes two capital ships whose tonnage will exceed 35,000 with 16-inch guns. It is expected that three similar ships will be. laid down later to enable a complete squadron to be formed, in addition to the five 35,000-ton warships with 14-inch guns already under construction.
