GOLF CONTESTS

WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION AT AKARANA EVENT DURING WEEK-END ARRANGEMENT OF THE DRAW The annual Auckland winter golf championship and handicap tournament will be staged on the Akarana links at Mount Roskill during the coming weekend. A particularly strong and representative entry has been received, the field including the five local scratch players, W. J. Davidge, H. 1). Brinsden and J. H. Young, of Titirangi, P. G. F. Smith, Akarana, and B. G. Thomson, Auckland. More than 50 of the competitors are handicapped on single figures and entries have been received from Miramar, Te Awamutu, Wairoa, WeUsford and Rotorua. A qualifying test of 18 holes medal play will be decided next Saturday, the best 16 gross to comprise the championsnip event, while the next 16 gross will contest the Akarana Cup by handicap match play. 'J he competitor returning the best gross score will be the winner of the wintei scratch medal. The remaining players will be divided into groups of eight for handicap match play.
