WINDOW SMASHED

JEWELLER'S SHOP MAN BEFORE COURT REMANDED FOR SENTENCE - A former ship's fireman, Robert James Hainer, aged 59, single, appeared before Mr. C. It. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday, charged with committing mischief by wilfully damaging a plate glass window valued at £l2 8s Bd, the property of William Knutton Tugby. The charge arose from the smashing of a window in a jeweller's shop in Karangahapo Road on the night of May 1. Accused pleaded guilty. Taken to the Auckland Hospital on tho night of tho incident on account of a deep cut on his right wrist, accused made a statement to Detective Clements in which ho admitted breaking the window. Ho said ho had been forced nine years ago to givo up his occupation of ship's fireman owing to failing eyesight. On the night of May 1 he recalled walking down Pitt Street to a vacant section, where he picked up a halfbrick, wrapped it in brown paper and returned to Karangahape Road. Ho remembered pushing the brick through a plate glass window, but could not say , why he did so. Accused said he often suffered from attacks of dizziness and J pains in his head. j Detective-Sergeant McHugh said the i evidence showed that accused had made ! a deliberate attempt to steal the contents of tho window. Only one watch, which accused denied taking, was missing. Accused, who had been discharged from hospital yesterday morning, had no money and had been out of work since Easter. The only conclusion to be drawn from tho evidence, said the magistrate, was that accused had broken the window for tho purpose of taking jewellery. So that a report from the probation officer could be obtained, accused was ' remanded until Wednesday for sentence.
