ART EXHIBITION

" UNPAINTED PICTURES" ADDRESS BY MR. ARCHEY "To appreciate the work of an artist, we must go through the mental processes which led to the creation of the picture in the mind of the artist before he put his brush to canvas," said Mr. Gilbert Archev, curator of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, in his address on "Unpainted Pictures" at the exhibition of paintings by New Zealand artists in Unity Hall last night. Pictures Avere not mere representations of objects in nature, added Mr. Archev, but were creations in which! something of the artist himself, soma emotional reaction, was added to the subject depicted. To understand the artistry with which that was conveyed, it was necessary to follow the artist in his first perception of the subject, his analysis of the elements in the subject which caused the response and his composition and refinement of them by imagination and judgment until the picture was built up in his mind. T-his recreating of the "unpainted pictnre' was an elementary form of art in which everyone could indulge. _ _ The exhibition, which is being held under the auspices of the Auckland Society of Arts, will conclude to-mor-row. The results of the art union organised in connection with the exhibition are published on another page in tuis issue. • ' ■
