CLOSING ROADS
DETOURS NECESSARY WORK NEAR TE AWAMUTU THE POSITION AT TIRAU A section of the Te Awamutu-Cam-bridge main highway will be closed for through traffic as from nine o'clock this morning, according to advice received by the Automobile Association (Auckland). Two and a-quarter miles of the highway has been prepared for sealing, and, if the weather is fine, it is proposed to surface the entire length in one operation during the day. The portion to be sealed commences approximately three miles from To Awaniutu, and a detour route via Te Rahu will be available for traffic. Although the detour is not metalled, its surface is of a sandy formation which should hold traffic satisfactorily. No extra mileage is involved. Part of the Rotorua main highway in the vicinity of Tirau has been officially closed to heavy traffic owing to wet weather affecting the new works. Consolidation is not sufficiently advanced to support tho weight of heavily-laden commercial vehicles. The detour from Tirau will be on the tar-sealed Matamata highway to its junction with the Tauranga road, where traffic will turn left and rejoin the Rotorua highway at Pairere, near the Horahora junction. The Okoroire station to Pairere road, which would afford a shorter detour, is not available to heavy traffic, owing to its classification as a fifth-class road. Drivers of heavy vehicles are liable to prosecution for travelling on this particular road with weights ip excess of the classification. With the easement of traffic on the main highway, and a short spell of fine weather, it is not anticipated that there will be any serious inconvenience on the main highway to Rotorua as far as private cars are concerned.
