May 81 The cricket match at Lord's between Australia and Middlesex ended in a draw. | Rain fell early in the afternoon, and when Australia went out to. bat in the second innings the wicket was tricky. Badcock was bowled ,in Novell's first over, the young player thus getting him twice in the game. Bradman began uncertainly, but Fingleton was confident and batted very well. Later Bradman became accustomed to the wicket. McCabe was in excellent form and batted brilliantly. The match ended on a sporting note, as Bradman declared the innings closed to allow -Edrich to score the 10 runs necessary to complete his 1000 runs in May. Edrich made 20 in twelve minutes and stumps were then drawn to enable the Australians to start earlier for the West of England. Details of the score are:—! GLOUCESTER MATCH RAIN DELAYS START BRADMAN NOT PLAYING MAY BE OBLIGED TO REST (Received Jane 1, 11.45 p.m.) LONDON, June 1 The start of the Australians' match against Gloucester at Bristol has been delayed owing to slight rain after an overnight downpour. There was no play before lunch. The cause of Bradman's . strained back has not yet been diagnosed and 1 he is unable, as he intended, to play against Bristol. He may be obliged to rest until the first test on June 10. Bradman went to London from Bristol for treatment. Bradman, Fingleton, White and Barnes are omitted from the team against Gloucester. Walker is 12th man. TEST TRIAL BEGUN REST TWO DOWN FOR 97 ALLEN REPLACED BY NICHOLS (Received June 2, 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 1 For the first test trial at Lord's the weather is dull and the wicket soft. G. O. B. Allen, captain of England in the last series of cricket tests against Australia, was unfit to play. His place has been taken by M. S. Nichols, the fast bowler with A. H. H.
