IRISH DILEMMA
MR. DE VALERA CRITICISED TURN OF POLITICAL WHEEL Times Cable LONDON.- May 81 The complete lack of logic seemingly governing Irish politics is aptly illustrated in the situation leading up to the elections, states the Dublin correspondent of. the Times. It "seems at the moment that those wishing to retain Eire's connection with the Empire have to vote for Mr. de Valera, who was formerly regarded as the sea-green incorruptible of republicanism, and against Mr. W. T. Cosgrave, who, during his term of office, achieved a high reputation as a Commonwealth statesman. Although Mr de Valera is clearly modernising the defence ports solely in the interests of Eire, the Cosgrave Party is attacking Mr. de Yalera on the grounds that he is making Eire a British outpost. This incredible turn of the political wheel lias resulted in Mr. de Valera facing the electorate as the involuntary champion of the connection with Britain
