WAIKATO WINTER SHOW

Judging by its remarkable progress in recent years, the Waikato Winter Show, opening in Hamilton to-day, can confidently look forward to creating new records on this present occasion. Outgrowing district and provincial status, it has become a veritable national event, a development much assisted by the practical enterprise and clear vision of the association's executive. That development has, of course, kept in step with the rapid advance of the rich pastoral area of which Hamilton is the centre and capital. It is fitting that one of the world's greatest dairying districts should have organised one of the world's greatest dairy shows. This feature establishes the show's claim to more than national fame, a claim well upheld this year by the total of 1180 entries in the butter and cheese sections. The judges' complimentary remarks on the butter section are especially gratifying. They again note a remarkable evenness of quality at the highest standard, even among exhibits taken from ordinary shipments made as early as January. Occasionally voices are raised for more character and individuality but a standardised product, whose uniformity and keeping quality are recognised, possesses a unique recommendation for steady marketing. Apart from the dairy exhibits, the show is packed with many other educational and entertainment features. Particular note should be made of the International Photographic Salon, an innovation last year that is already well established and widely representative. It comes as a strong reinforcement to the many-sided interest of the arts and crafts and home industries section. Trade exhibits and "the fun of the fair" take their part, also, in attracting visitors from far and wide, so making the show an annual reunion and endowing it with a valuable social function that it promises once again to discharge most worthily.
