BLACKBERRY MENACE
ENCROACHMENT ON ROADS LAND DEPARTMENT'S CONCERN The recent action of the Automobile [Association (Auckland), Incorporated, in drawing the attention of the Government and local authorities to the extent to which blackberry growth is encroaching ou the sides of roads and highways has received support from numerous motorists, who have communicated with the association confirming the reports of its officials. The question of combating the menace appears to present many difficulties, as the association has been advised by several local bodies that for various reasons it is practically impossible to enforce the Noxious Weeds and Counties Act in connection with the clearance of noxious weeds from road frontages. They have also stated that the clearing of blackberry from all roads would represent an expenditure beyond their resources. The Lands and Survey Department has expressed concern at the association's report, and has promised support in considering what can bo done to overcome the menace.
