DEEP-SEA FISHING

AUCKLANDER'S CERTIFICATE Mr. V. Salek, of Auckland, has received from the committee governing the Australian 150 th anniversary celebrations big game angling contest a certificate in commemoration of his capturing of a whaler shark on March 11 last at Port Hacking, New South Wales. This fish, which weighed 4521b. and was 10ft. 7in. in length and 4ft. sJin. in girth, was easily the heaviest caught during the contest, but it was ruled out by the committee on account of its being of the whaler variety. The certificate, which is the only one of its kind to come to New Zealand, is an attractive work of art. In the centre is a coloured photograph of Montague Island, off Bermugai, while on either side is a picture of a mako shark and a swordfish leaping high out of water. It is signed by the Premier of New South Wales, the Minister in charge of the celebrations and by the chairman of the angling committee. Mr. Salek is the representative of deep sea fishing on the Auckland Centenary Celebrations Committee, and the knowledge he acquired on his recent visit to Australia should be of valuable assistance toward making the New Zealand competition a greater success than that held in Australia.
