WEATHER IN MAY
MANY SUNNY DAYS VARIABLE TEMPERATURES Very variable weather, but with no more than average rainfall, was experienced by Auckland last month, according to tlie Government observer, Mr. S. M. Yallop. Even variable weather, however, was a decided improvement upon the rainy May of last year, and in place of the 21 days then upon which rain fell, there were only 14. days last month when rain was recorded. The total rainfall for the month was 4.59 in., and the maximum fall was of 1.08 in., on May 4. compared with 7.04 in. and 1.l Sin. last year. There was a substantial amount of sunshine, and on six days the fullest possible sunshine was recorded. The total amount for the mouth was 157 hours 18 minutes, almost 49 hours more than the total for May, 1937. Tho maximum recorded was on May 22, when there were 9 hours 3G minutes of sunshine. There were only six days without any at all.
Temperatures ranged from 34.0 degrees on grass to 57.0. The mean for the month was 58.87 degrees, compared with 56.90 in May of last year. The mean maximum level was 64.40 degrees and the mean minimum 53.35 degrees. The extreme maximum was 70.4 degrees on May 6, and the extreme minimum 43.0 degrees on May 22. The lowest grass reading was 34.0 degrees on May 22.
High barometric pressures were recorded from May 11 to 18 and from May 21 to 25. The mean pressure for the month was 30.156 in. The maximum was 30.542 on May 23, and the minimum 29.351 on May 4. Winds were, mostly light to moderate, but they rose to gale force on two days. Dew was recorded on 14 days.
