DAIRY AWARDS

IWAIKATO WINTER SHOW record entries received SPLENDID . QUALITY. BUTTER CHEESE OF GOOD APPEARANCE ]>ROJI OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON. Monday One of the most important sections at the Waikato Winter Show, which is to be opened in Hamilton on Wednesday, is that devoted to the butter and cheese exhibits. The section attracted record entries this year, the total being 1180, comprising 759 in the butter division, and 421 in the cheese division. The judges, who were officers of the dairy division of the Department of Agriculture, were as follows: —Butter: Messrs. J. O'Dea (Wellington), W. Dempster (Hamilton), N. Wallace L. Morrison (Wliangarei), ,J. Wainscott (Napier), J. G. Wilson (New Plymouth), E. G. Melton (Palmerston North), T. Henry and G. Batt ■ (Hamilton). Cheese: C. Stevenson (Wellington), E. C. Wood (Auckland), T. M. Foster (Auckland), W. 'Crawford (New Plymouth), M. TenBent (Bluff), J. Earl (Hamilton). Uniformity of Butter

Commenting on the butter exhibits, the judges said:

"The outstanding feature, after comparing the quality of butter former years, was the remarkable uniformity in all classes, the number of exhibits which would score under finest grade being practically non-existent. The fact of as high as 84* points being scored in several classes without the exhibitor getting into the prize list would tend to show the high standard attained .by the prize-winners.

"Special reference is duo to the high quality of the butter taken from ordinary shipment, and as one class was selected during January, this class compared favourably with the class taken at a later date, a pleasing feature being that' all of this butter ivas still finest quality. The finish and general appearanco of exhibits was attractive and managers are to be congratulated on giving the attention to this most necessary detail." Attractive Cheese Exhibits

Referring to the cheese exhibited, the judges commented as follows: — "The exhibitors are to be complimented on the attractive appearance of the cheese benched for this year's show. With few exceptions there was an absence of mould growth on the rinds, and the finish of the cheese had reoeived careful attention. In a number of instances firmer bodies would have been preferable. Mechanical openness was not much in evidence, but slithy texture was fairly general. "Flavours were generally sound and satisfactory, but in a few instances scorched flavour was evident, and this is a characteristic which should bo avoided, as such has a tendency to cause bitterness, in flavour. "Considering the difficult season experienced through climate conditions, exhibitors are to be complimented on the general quality of this year's exhibit. OPENING TO-MORROW NINE-DAY FIXTURE, PREPARATIONS COMPLETE [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday Considered to be one of the greatest dairy shows in the world, the 32nd annual Waikato Winter Show and Industrial Exhibition, will be officially opened in the Bledisloe Hall, Hamilton, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday by the Gover-nor-General, Viscount Gahvay. The show will continue until June 9 and again this year entries in all sections have reached record proportions. In addition to record entries in the butter and cheese sections other sides of farming life have been given clue attention and in this year's show products of the farm will mako a more imposing display than ever before. Since the last show Bledisloo Hall, which is the central part of the exhibition, has undergone several chanties. Improvements include a welded steel bridge reaching from tho dais at the rear of the hall to the bandstand in the centre. It will be used principally to give the public a better view of the various displays, such a.i the fashion .parade. For the more artisticly inclined the show association has introduced a novel mangold and turnip personality competition, in which competitors arc required to sculpture a model of some well-known personality from a mangold or turnip. Arrangements have been completed with the Railway Department for the transport of schoolchildren to the show. On Friday special school trains will run from Mercer and Taumarunui to Hamilton. It is expected that about 20,000 children will travel by these trains.
